Destination Wedding Photographer: Why an engagement session is necessary

For those who groan at the thought of an engagement session—this is my PSA to you AND other photographers who struggle explaining to clients the importance of one.

Before I go any further, there can be time and travel constraints—I work with couples all over the country and sometime's it is impossible to get one scheduled before the big day. But if time is on our side, I am only a flight away. Nothing sounds more exciting to me than visiting your hometown, or where you fell in love, and getting to shoot in a new location! I have shot engagements as far as Mexico, New York and Chicago.

why engagement sessions are awesome:

1. It's not all about the photos—we get to talk about your wedding day, drink coffee (or beer), eat great food together —all of the things. The more we hang, the more we get to know each other and the more I will UNDERSTAND your vision.

2. You learn what it feels like to be in front of the camera—because, face it, the last time was probably in high school or at someone else's wedding.  :)

3. I learn your relationship dynamic. Not all couples are openly affectionate, especially in public or in front of the camera. I have learned by photographing hundreds of couples, that the best way to get "authentic moments" on the wedding day, is to shoot together beforehand. I will be taking mental notes during the session, what works/ what doesn't work —and when you both felt at ease. This is the sweet spot. Finding real moments.

Remember, authentic photographs stem from relationships that have been built between clients and the photographer.

some tips:

1. Time. Let's shoot during the golden hour! This means sunrise or sunset (preferably sunset because I am a night owl). Be ready to shoot for 1-2 hours depending on locations.

2. Location, location! This I leave up to you (unless you have no clue!) I can make a great photograph anywhere. I want your locations to reflect who you are as a couple. Where do you feel most comfortable? A walking trail near your house? The beach? At home with your dogs? A brewery or gallery? I always bring walking shoes and am up for an adventure.

3. What to wear. This totally depends on the season's color scheme and I always vote for two outfits. Casual to start and a formal look to change into. Ladies, this includes a dress and heels if that's your thing. If not, rock your Birkenstocks or go barefoot! Gentlemen, a button up always works. No jeans, please. I recommend all couples to choose their location first, then we'll start talking about attire. You can never go wrong with black.

4. Makeup. Ladies, have your makeup professionally done if you are doing so on your wedding day. This is the perfect opportunity for a trial with your artist, to see what works.

5. What to bring. Walking shoes. Umbrella if there is a chance of rain (rainy shoots are fun—but please bring a clear OR black umbrella). Blanket or mat to sit on if we're going to be in nature. Any other items, please clear with me. I don't recommend chalkboards and sign-holding, it often distracts from the authentic photos I keep talking about.
